چکیده

Iron redox cycling in metal-rich, hypersaline, anoxic brines plays a central role in the biogeochemical evolution of life on Earth, and similar brines with the potential to harbor life are thought to exist elsewhere in the solar system. To investigate iron biogeochemical cycling in a terrestrial analog we determined the iron redox chemistry and isotopic signatures in the cryoencapsulated liquid brines found in frozen Lake Vida, East Antarctica. We used both in situ voltammetry and the spectrophotometric ferrozine method to determine iron speciation in Lake Vida brine (LVBr). Our results show that iron speciation in the anoxic LVBr was, unexpectedly, not free Fe(II). Iron isotope analysis revealed highly depleted values of -2.5% for the ferric iron of LVBr that are similar to iron isotopic signatures of Fe(II) produced by dissimilatory iron reduction. The presence of Fe(III) in LVBr therefore indicates dynamic iron redox cycling beyond iron reduction. Furthermore, extremely low dO–SO4 2values (-9.7%) support microbial iron-sulfur cycling reactions. In combination with evidence for chemodenitrification resulting in iron oxidation, we conclude that coupled Responsible Editor: Stuart Grandy. Nitrate controls on iron and arsenic in an urban lake.

Aquatic ecosystems are often contaminated by multiple substances. Nitrate, a common aquatic pollutant, strongly influenced the cycling of arsenic (As) under anoxic conditions in urban Upper Mystic Lake (Massachusetts, USA) by oxidizing ferrous iron [Fe(II)] to produce As-sorbing particulate hydrous ferric oxides and causing the more oxidized As(V), which is more particle-reactive than As(III) u...

Biogeochemistry of methane in the permanently ice-covered Lake Untersee, central Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica

We found unprecedentedly high abundances of microbially produced CH4 in the anoxic deep waters of Lake Untersee, an oligotrophic, perennially ice-covered Antarctic freshwater lake. The maximum CH4 concentration (approaching 21.8 6 1.4 mmol L21) is one of the highest observed so far in a natural aquatic ecosystem. Although surficial lake sediments are the predominant source of CH4 in Lake Unters...

Why the phosphorus retention of lakes does not necessarily depend on the oxygen supply to their sediment surface

In order to improve the trophic state of Lake Sempach, a eutrophied lake in central Switzerland, its external phosphorus (P) load has been decreased and its hypolimnion has been artificially oxygenated to lower the lake-internal P recycling. Based on more than 15 yr of experience, we conclude that the reduction of the external P load resulted in a corresponding decrease of the lake’s P concentr...

Microbial Community Structure of Subglacial Lake Whillans, West Antarctica

Subglacial Lake Whillans (SLW) is located beneath ∼800 m of ice on the Whillans Ice Stream in West Antarctica and was sampled in January of 2013, providing the first opportunity to directly examine water and sediments from an Antarctic subglacial lake. To minimize the introduction of surface contaminants to SLW during its exploration, an access borehole was created using a microbiologically cle...

Aerobic proteobacterial methylotrophs in Movile Cave: genomic and metagenomic analyses

BACKGROUND Movile Cave (Mangalia, Romania) is a unique ecosystem where the food web is sustained by microbial primary production, analogous to deep-sea hydrothermal vents. Specifically, chemoautotrophic microbes deriving energy from the oxidation of hydrogen sulphide and methane form the basis of the food web. RESULTS Here, we report the isolation of the first methane-oxidizing bacterium from...
